TGIF! Today’s post is going to be a little different because I am linking up with three other lovely ladies today to gush about giving up our favorite pastime, shopping. For those of you who follow me on twitter you probably already know, but I gave up shopping for lent. After a little bit of a spending frenzy during my NYC trip I knew a cut back in my shopping was a necessity! I have tried attempting a shopping hiatus in the past, but my weak self control got in the way and the next thing I knew I was at the mall. Soo.. What better way to hold myself accountable than lent!? So for the next couple of Fridays Krista from the Southern Shopaholic, Sydney from Summer Wind, Miss Andrea Lee from Tickled Pink, and myself will be linking up about our experiences, wish lists, and tips to survive a shopping free lent. Todays topic: tricks of the trade to not shop!
Okay, so one might think its a little silly to need ways to keep me from shopping, but after week one I am in dyer need of them. So here is what I have come up with so far 🙂
1. Shop my wardrobe:
I am almost embarrassed to say there are a few several things in my closet that still have the tags on them. Guilty, I know. In my defense I think it really has a lot to do with working in retail. Things in my store end up on clearance, and then they somehow miraculously wind up in my closet! Its a crazy thing, I tell ya! But seriously, I can’t say no to a $15 tweed skirt or a $20 sweater. So, I will be shopping my closet and finally taking the tags off of those babies. Hopefully it will feel a little like shopping. Heres to hoping!
2. Remix my closet:
There are so many pieces in my closet that I adore, but they don’t get the love they deserve because the next best thing gets hung on the hanger beside it. I will be making a conscious effort to put together different outfits with beloved pieces, in hopes it feels a little bit like putting on a new outfit. Look forward to more proof of that 😉
3. STAY AWAY FROM THE MALL:
Pretty original advice, I’m sure. Peaking online is okay and adding everything your little heart desires to your online shopping cart (without actually purchasing of course) is okay, but I know the second I step foot in a mall its game over. Just. Stay. Away.
I seriously have my fingers crossed that a little bit of self control and these three little tips do the trick!
Dress Accordingly,
xoxo

This is brilliant and hysterical at all the same time…seriously. I do not formally practice lent, but I do really love the thought behind it. This is a great idea of a committment to make in general. We are saving up to buy a house and my husband wants me to adhere to a strict budget. I LOVE knowing that I am not the only one who puts items in my online shopping carts and then exits out of the page 😉
I really look forward to following along!
Sincerely,
Morgan of Wake Up Your Wardrobe

Good luck!! It really is so hard to quit shopping but it'll definitely help holding yourself accountable on the blog! I know what you mean about working retail, too, and I don't know if you're at J. Crew (I was) but a lot of that stuff isn't returnable so you can't even have buyer's remorse. Looking forward to your new outfits!

I just added you to my blog list… and I laughed out loud when I read that you gave up shopping for Lent, because I just did the same (belatedly) today! At first I gave up alcohol, but then I realized that a glass of wine at night is necessary for my sanity and that I do far more damage with my credit card at the mall/outlets than I ever do with alcohol…
A little late, but I'm with you in spirit on this one. Here's to willpower! (I'll drink to that one.)

I gave up shopping for lent too!! It's been tough but I know it will be so rewarding when it's over. For the time being I'll just keep making wish lists for that shopping spree I'll totally deserve come Easter! 😉
