Our southern transitional living room decor reveal is finally LIVE! It’s a long time coming, and today I’m sharing how we’ve made the most out of the space, design tips & more.
Happy Tuesday y’all! This post has been 2 years in the making, and I finally feel like this room is “finished”. I’ve been dying to shoot this room since we got big furniture pieces in spring of 2019. But good things take time, and after learning the hard way from our last home, interior design is best when not rushed.
When we originally moved into this home, we didn’t really know the direction we wanted to go in as far as home decor style. We called in some reinforcements from Market on National & they really nailed it. I knew I wanted some color, and I wanted to accent the existing wallpaper in the entryway & dining room. They formulated a beautiful & functional design plan that really checks off all the boxes.
Our plan for this room: make it multifunctional.
This is the only “living room” type space in our home, and where we spend the majority of our time when we’re home, so we really wanted it to be a comfortable space. This room serves as our “family room”. It’s where we have our Grey’s Anatomy marathons, where we cheer on the CATS & where we too often eat dinner from our table trays. But it’s also where we entertain friends & family! We love to entertain, so we wanted the set up to accommodate as many people as possible, while still being a comfy space we can enjoy just as much when it is just the two of us.
Our home is old, and full of quirks (which we love!), so we had to make do with the layout we were given. Because it would serve as our family room, Tyler was adamant the TV went over the fireplace. He doesn’t ask for much, so while it is kind of an eye sore (a frame tv is on my wishlist!) I was happy to oblige. This set the tone for the layout, as we wanted the couch to face towards the TV.
Thankfully the size of the room lent itself to a decent size couch if pushed against the back wall. We opted for a couch instead of a sectional due to the entertaining aspect. The single couch freed up enough room to add 2 swivel chairs & another accent chair that could be pulled out when entertaining. The swivel chairs are so comfortable, and love that we were able to make them our own through Market on National. We chose a durable fabric complimentary to the fabric of the couch, and I adore the subtle print to them.
All in all, I am so pleased with the setup of this room. It’s the perfect blend of lived in & formal.
It’s all in the details:
Color is kinda my thing, and while the couch, chairs & art have color to them, they’re pretty subtle. I love adding color to this room with coffee table books, fresh flowers & ginger jars. I love shopping for the smaller pieces that complete a room, and it’s taken nearly two years to finally find all the finishing touches!
One of my favorite interior design tips: mixing textures.
Cane, lucite, velvet, brass, wood are all elements in our living room! Elements like lucite & brass can feel cold. Been there, learned that. Adding some pops of velvet & wood really compliments & adds warmth to those textures.
Home Decor Tip: throw pillows are one of the easiest ways to add some color into your space.
Not only was I big on adding different textures to the room, I also love mixing metals throughout this space as well. The darker metals In the mirror & coffee table with the brass work surprisingly well. That was another suggestion Market on National made for us, and we love the end result.
How to style a console table:
There are really no rules to this! It’s all about your preferences & needs. We didn’t need to utilize it for storage; we use it more just for looks & to display the duo of lamps. It’s also the perfect place to display some of our favorite photos, books & such.
I do, however, love to work in 3s. 3 books stacked together, 3 groups across the table, 3 picture frames, 3 knick knacks, etc! The finished result is a more is more approach to styling a console table, which is very much me. If less is more is more your thing, you could swap the bottom for a few storage baskets & place a gorgeous tray on the center on top to round out the display.
And there you have it y’all! Our southern transitional living room decor! Wondering where the term “southern transitional” comes from? Head over to this post.

this space is so you! and I love that you mentioned rushing interior design is not a good idea. we also did that in our townhouse and lesson learned! we have really been taking out time with the house and making sure we 100% love aka are obsessed with everything we purchase. which has resulted in a home we love – thus far – lots more to do haha! I love all of your accents and the different spaces you created within this space! also that photo of Calvin on the chair cracks me up – that little guy and his mean mug haha.
